Managing Risks and Inappropriate Pursuers

Of concern to many is the threat of obsessed and unstable individual. While these people are generally considered a problem of the public figure, the business person and private citizen are not immune form the irrational behavior of these individuals.

Different case dynamics--obsessions, romantic fixations, delusions, perceived "wars", threats and intimidations--all impact and affect decisions about the most appropriate course of action.

Each case has its own dynamics, and there are no easy answers. Therefore case management strategies must be based on the Risk & Threat Assessment.

Protective Services Group uses a four-step threat Management Program: Identify, Investigate, Assess and Manage.

Proper case management might consist of monitoring communications with no intervention activity, or it might involve coordination with law enforcement and pursuit of criminal prosecution. Intervention may also include the involvement of mental health professionals and/or family members.

Many make the mistake of applying good interventions inappropriately or in the wrong circumstances and, thus, risk catapulting benign situations into dangerous matters.

The assessment process is not a one-time occurrence but, rather, an ongoing process.
